Diversionary Tactics

by naomi on August 26, 2009

Just read Seth Godin’s post about adding brackets as a diversion to sneak in the stuff that’s really important. Actually, you end up doing this kind of thing all the time in architecture.

If in doubt, have one wall painted a deep fuschia colour. Almost all clients will object to this, and you can take it out, leaving you with enough goodwill to sneak in some special lighting effects, or that cool negative detail you’ve been waiting to get into a project ever since you saw it in Rome.

Like most things, design isn’t done in a vacuum. It’s full of people, opinions and seat-of-the-pants decisions. Welcome to the real world.

Loved Seth’s article. I can’t imagine ever doing that in real life, though. I’d be afraid they’d actually LIKE it. (Oh yes! I love the all of the superfluous commas! Let’s do *that*.)
